A STAGED READING
Written by Danny Bernardo
Directed by Greg Kolack
In Danny Bernardo’s MAHAL, a Filipino American family redefines itself after loss & reclaims its culture. After the death of the Reyes family matriarch, new relationships blossom, old ones are rediscovered, and family bonds are tested, as a long repressed secret from the homeland threatens to tear the family apart.
MAHAL skillfully and compassionately interweaves themes of cultural identity, assimilation, homophobia, and inter-generational conflict as it sets out to explore a 21st century American family in a world of hybridities.
Followed by a Q&A session with playwright Danny Bernardo.
All performances held at Pierce Hall at The Historic Chicago Temple Building, 77 W Washington St., Chicago.
